Liar Liar, Pants on Fire...

Was what Rep. Wilson said during President Obama's Healthcare Address to a joint session of Congress?

People that know me might be surprised by a bit more of a nuanced answer than they were expecting.

Rep. Wilson simply contributed to a further coarsening of the dialogue at a time when it's not necessary. Enough with firebrands. Enough with childish name calling. Let's try something novel and have our elected officials act like grownups. They can start by stopping this silly call for censure.

What Wilson did wasn't un-American like some people want to say it is...it was quintessentially American...he expressed his opinion. The problem is that he did it in a boorish way and in the wrong forum. How can we expect more from our children in THEIR behavior than we do from Congressmen?

Only a blind person would say that our country doesn't have problems. It'd be nice if the people that were charged with fixing them didn't strongly resemble my daughter's 3rd grade class while out on the recess yard. Here's a good rule of thumb: if you would put your kid in timeout for doing something, you shouldn't accept that behavior from a public figure.

Woooooow

Holy crap...almost a year since my last post...ain't like it's been uneventful in that stretch either...not that anyone that actually reads my blog would be surprised by any of the events.

But, just to make me feel like I've accomplished something, I'll sum up (explaining takes too long, after all).

I'm now once again happily married...and my wonderful wife and I are expecting a bundle of...

...

...

Well...destruction, if the truth be told.

If you hear sobbing in mid to late November, that'll be us.

::nods::

I got Halo to fly on a plane for our honeymoon trip to New Orleans...

What can I actually say about New Orleans? We were there for 4 days, and I could have happily stayed forever. The French Quarter is like nothing I've ever seen before, to the point that I actually appreciated architecture (not normally my bag). The people were wonderful, the city beautiful and...yeah.

Had I the ability to do so, its one of the few places that I'd happily move to.

And now?

Well, we've been back for over a month. The kids are getting ready to start school.
The Little Miss will be heading out for her first sleepaway camp ever. I'm excited for her but selfishly bitter at the same time. I feel like Shorty, Little Miss and Trouble have been gone most of the summer and we haven't got to spend any time with 'em.

Very frustrating for a homebody like me.

Ah well...part of kids growing up, I guess.

Seems like they're all hitting/have hit those ages where they require less time (both a good thing and a bad thing if you ask me).

Hopefully I write something more recent than a year from now...but no promises.

::wink::

Seven years...(in 2 days)

September 11, 2001 is a day that no one will ever forget...but it doesn't mean quite the same thing for me that it does for most other folks.

Aside from giving Rudy Giuliani something to talk about for the rest of his life, 9/11 gave me my first taste of fatherhood.

My daughter came into the world that day...and for almost seven years now I've been in awe of her.

Watching her grow up from a little blue, creature that looked vaguely like a cross between Winston Churchill and a lizard to the discerning young girl that she's rapidly becoming has been a joy from the first, and watching her young mind develop independence continues to fill me with pride.

With all of the pressures (both self-imposed and otherwise) that we face every day, sometimes it's easy to lose sight of the important things, so I'll take this moment to reflect on one of them and say how proud I am of not only her, but all three girls...four if you count Halo.

With the love and support that they provide to me, I can't help but feel that I've truly been blessed...and not in that creepy born-again way.

George Carlin (1937 - 2008)

Without him, we wouldn't have the types of social commentary in stand up comedy that lead to The Daily Show and Cobert Report...and the world would be a duller place for it.

Mr. Carlin, you will be missed.

...But it was a cartoon!

Have you ever seen or read something that sorta stuck in you head...stuck in your head and just wouldn't leave it? You find yourself randomly thinking about it, getting drawn inexorably in again and again when you have no desire to think about it?

Well, a little while ago, Halo and I purchased Grave of the Fireflies an anime from Studio Ghibli, the same folks that brought you My Neighbor Totoro, Howl's Moving Castle, and a bunch of other really great movies.

She warned be before hand that it was sad, and I nodded. After all, it's a cartoon, how bad could it be?

Then I saw it.

Grave of the Fireflies is the single most powerful anti-war film I have ever seen, in addition to being a scathing critique on how people (in this case the Japanese) deal with their fellow man in times of crisis. It's images are haunting, all the more because of their striking beauty. I don't cry at movies, but I will be the first to admit, that I did at Grave of the Fireflies, and did so frequently towards the end (the fact that they paired this movie with My Neighbor Totoro when the initiall released it in Japan is horrifying to me...sorta like pairing Schindler's List with Enchanted...but more so).

If you haven't seen this movie, it really, really is worth it...not to be entertained...because it's NOT entertaining in any way I can conceive of...but because it's something that everyone should see at some point in their lives.

Just not with the kids around.

How can this be?

Okay...

So, I'm back at work for the first time since what seems like forever ago...

No sir, I don't like it.

I'm trying to get over some sort of horrid death-plague that caused me to shiver uncontrollably for a good portion of yesterday, I haven't managed to be permitted to speak to LAM and GEM since I dropped 'em off with Pooh ('cause God knows that letting them talk to me would kill her).

Still no word on when the custody hearing is.

New Years was...well, it was.

There were good times, and bad. I was glad to see people, but the more I'm in large party-type settings, the more I'm realizing that I think I prefer slightly smaller gatherings where things can be a bit more involved.

Plus I was fighting off serious bouts of upset over the fact that the girls weren't there.

::shrug::

It is what it is, I suppose.

So...new year, new chances.

2006 will certainly be memorable for me for a lot of different reasons, some good, some bad. I realize that now more than ever my life is a work in progress...and that's not a bad thing. We'll see where I am 364 days from now. With any sorta luck, 2007 will avoid the drama-filled tendencies of its predecessor.

Time will tell.

So...till my lazy butt bothers to post again, salud.

(Courtesy of Stephen Brust's livejoural)

Gingerbread House

We were thinking about doing a gingerbread house for Christmas. I've never assembled a gingerbread house before. Does anyone know what the spec is for gingerbread electrical? Do I need to have grounded gingerbread outlets? Also, can I get a gingerbread tax break if I install gingerbread solar heating? Am I going to have to pay fees if I build in a gated gingerbread community?

Maybe we'll just do blueberry muffins.

It's just tiring...

Christmas shopping is finished.

But at this point, I just feel like I want to lay down and not get back up. I miss my kids horribly, feel like very little in my life's going right (certainly nothing's actually stable right now), and it's only a matter of time till something awful happens.

Could be at the custody hearing.

Could be before.

Could be after.

::shrugs::

When so many things have gone wrong, its tough not to think that more's on the way...and the horrible thing is that I KNOW that this mindset is unhealthy, and likely just contributing to things not turning out well.

Which basically means I feel pretty detached from everything around me. Like a spectator watching things go by and trying hard to care, but unable to do so from being gun shy from getting hurt too often.

It's a rotten self defense method, but it seems to be the one that I've fallen into...

With any luck getting the kids on Friday and doing the whole Christmas thing will help snap me out of it.

'Cause if it doesn't, I don't know what will.

So...

Most everyone else around me has been sick on, off or constantly for the last few months (or so it seems).

Me?

I don't so much get sick...had a vaguely blue feeling from time to time, but that's understandable under the circumstances, I suspect...

The funny thing is that I feel kinda guilty about my good fortune in this regard...I mean, there's no reason for it.

I haven't been eating well...I haven't been going to the gym regularly over the last month at least, and I've certainly not been taking vitamins or anything like that.

But here I am, healthy and just sorta rockin' along while everyone has a variety of health issues around me.

Strange.

I'm just as glad for the distraction, really...God knows that there are less productive avenues for my brain to wander down right now...

In fact, look, there it goes.

::sigh::
